NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is a vital co-enzyme essential for supplying energy for every cellular process in your body. ‘Fuel’ for your cells, in other words.

With an ample supply available and consistently replenished, your cells will function at their best, leading to the optimal performance of your body’s capabilities.

Think: improved energy and stamina, optimal mental capacities, reduced inflammation, reduced cravings, unfailingly ready to take on the day.

The bad news is, from the age of about 23, we become far less efficient at producing NAD+ and less able to salvage it from cellular cycles. So, the amount in our bodies declines sharply – by as much as 50 per cent every 20 years or so – making essential cellular processes increasingly less efficient.

Broadly, it’s this reduction that’s described by the term ‘cellular ageing’, and with it the signs we associate with getting older: fatigue, wrinkled skin, more sedentary living, the increased likelihood of chronic disease, chronic inflammation, injury and so on.

Luckily, we can now try to boost those levels through supplementation. But it’s tricky. NAD+ is a large, relatively unstable molecule, so oral supplementation is not ideal. The molecule cannot transfer through the gastrointestinal barrier, so it mainly gets used up by the bacteria in the gut. And this means not enough will reach the cells that need it.

However, there is a way to bypass the GI tract, by introducing NAD+ directly into the subcutaneous (under the skin) fat by means of injection pen or with an IV drip into the blood stream. Injecting subcutaneously is similar in method to administering insulin, heparin, or even Ozempic, for example. And it’s something that can be done simply at home.

NAD+ via IV, on the other hand, can only be administered by a doctor or nurse in a specialist clinic.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is Vive the brand to buy?

Because its dedicated lab in Finland ensures its unparalleled purity. Rigorous testing to meet stringent standards for absorbability and stability is critical for delivering your predictable, effective results. Unlike many NAD+ products on the market, Vive NAD+ is designed to maintain integrity and potency over time, minimising degradation and maximising efficacy.

What is better: a home pen kit or an IV?

Both treatments are effective and the quality and effect are the same. It comes down to personal preference: daily pen injections at home or a few hours in a clinic.

What is the NAD+ dose in the home kit versus an IV?

Home kit: Two 500mg cartridges (with 1,000mg in 6ml total), distributed in 20 subcutaneous pen injections over 40 days.
IV: 500mg over 3 hours.

What ingredients are inside the vial?

Pure NAD+ and sterile distilled water.

How should I store the pen?

The cartridge – and pen, once the cartridge is inserted – should be stored in the refrigerator at 2–8°C (36–46°F). Avoid exposure to sunlight or high temperatures, as these can degrade the NAD+ molecule.

Can I test my levels of NAD+ before I start injecting it?

Testing is indeed possible, this is mainly done using at-home testing kits that can be purchased online.

Is injecting NAD+ painful?

The pen injections are well-tolerated but may cause mild discomfort at the injection site in some people, which is normal. If you experience some discomfort, you may prefer to apply some ice beforehand to minimise it. The best tip to reduce the discomfort is to bring the pen containing the NAD+ cartridge to body temperature first. You can achieve this by removing the pen from the fridge 15-30 minutes before injecting it.

What’s the best time of day to inject?

There is no one time better than another. Some users prefer morning injections for an energy-boosting effect throughout the day. Others prefer evening injections because they believe it can help with the body’s night-time recovery processes.

How can I avoid bruising from the pen injections?

Bruising doesn’t happen often but it can from time to time. If you are prone to bruising, it can help to ice the area beforehand. The upper gluteal area is also less likely to bruise than the lower abdomen.

What should I do if I miss a dose?

Simply continue with your next scheduled dose. There is no need to double up to compensate for the missed one, but it is safe to do so should you prefer.

Are there any supplements I can stop taking if I inject NAD+?

There are no interactions with other supplements and medication so there is no need to discontinue any supplements or medication.

How quickly will I feel the effects?

Most people notice the benefits of taking it within one to two weeks.

Who shouldn’t use NAD+?

NAD+ is generally safe, but consult your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have an active cancer diagnosis, to ensure it’s appropriate for you.

Can it help with brain fog and fatigue?

Yes. Many users report significant improvement in mental clarity, focus, and energy levels after consistent use.

Is taking NAD+ better than taking NMN?

NMN is one of the precursors the body uses to make NAD+. Given that it is a smaller molecule it is hypothesised this may be absorbed orally and can help your body produce NAD+. Evidence on this is very limited, however. It is more sensible to supplement with the required component, which is NAD+, now that it is possible to do so.

Does NAD+ help with weight loss?

While not directly linked to weight loss, NAD+ supports mitochondrial function, which can enhance overall energy expenditure and metabolism when combined with a healthy diet and exercise. So you may notice that your appetite is somewhat suppressed.

Can I combine NAD+ with other treatments or supplements?

Yes. It can be safely combined with all medications, vitamins, minerals, and other therapies such as glutathione or vitamin C for enhanced results.

Will it make me look younger?

Through its anti-inflammatory properties, NAD+ greatly benefits skin health and complexion. Although, it can take a few weeks for the results of this to become apparent.

Is NAD+ the same as Vitamin B3?

No, vitamin B3, or niacin, is a precursor for NAD+. It is used by the body to synthesise NAD+, whereas NAD+ is the coenzyme itself that is responsible for energy production (ATP production) in the cells.

Is it beneficial at any age?

From the age of 23, our production of NAD+ becomes less efficient, as do the salvage pathways in the cells. So, from your late 20s to early 30s it would be beneficial. Before that age it would only be beneficial if the body has sustained injury or sickness and needs extra help to recover, like after surgery or during severe illness.

What if I have to stop taking it?

Your NAD+ levels will slowly return to their original state in relationship to your age and metabolic health. There is no acute crash-effect, nor is your body’s own production hindered by supplementation, which can be the case with certain hormones, such as testosterone. So the beneficial effects will slowly fade after a few days to weeks.

Is NAD+ treatment suitable for athletes?

Yes. It is popular among athletes for its recovery benefits, enhanced stamina, and improved cellular repair. Top athletes often use NAD+ to optimise performance and recovery. It is not a “performance enhancing drug” as it is naturally present in the body, nor is it on any forbidden substances list.
